Slasher, Victim Found After House Fire

"HARVEY, LA — Jefferson Parish authorities have identified the woman who was found stabbed to death inside a burning Marrero house Monday afternoon, in what they suspect was a murder and attempted suicide. Linda Honeycutt, 50, died of multiple stab wounds, said Dr. Gerry Cvitanovich, the Jefferson coroner.

"She and a man thought to be her boyfriend were found around 1 p.m. inside a house on 1705 Jutland Drive. Both were discovered when authorities searched the home after the fire. Honeycutt's body was toward the rear of the home, said Col. John Fortunato, a Sheriff's Office spokesman. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

"Authorities found Melvin Brooks Jr., 53, in the hallway, a knife wound to his neck and a knife under his body, Fortunato said. He was in critical condition Monday night at University Hospital.

"Authorities do not know Brooks' address, but investigators have been told that he and Honeycutt were dating."
