Ex-Husband Strikes Again

"Firestone, CO - A suspected murder-suicide left three people dead early Saturday morning in a Firestone subdivision.

"The incident, which led to a three-and-a-half hour standoff and prompted the partial evacuation of the Eagle Crest subdivision in Firestone, ended after members of the Weld County Regional SWAT team entered the residence at about 9:15 a.m. on Saturday to find the three people involved already dead.

"Firestone police first learned of the incident at 5:37 a.m. Saturday morning when the 24-year-old daughter of Sharla Acker, 41, called 9-1-1 after hearing a single gun shot while in her mother’s house on the 10000 block of Barron Circle in Firestone, according to Weld County Coroner Chris Robillard. Less than 10 minutes later, Firestone police were on scene working to get Sharla Acker’s daughter and 3-year-old grandson out of the house through a window, Robillard said.

"The daughter and grandson were unharmed.

"Police then evacuated a quarter of the subdivision and closed entrances into the subdivision until 11 a.m. in the event that a man had barricaded himself inside the residence.

"Robillard, however, said the incident likely ended shortly after it began — with Sharla Acker’s ex-husband Michael Acker, 47, of Commerce City, suspected of using a shotgun to kill Sharla Acker and her boyfriend Michael Frederico, 38.

"Michael Acker and Sharla Acker divorced in fall 2008, Robillard said. The incident is still under investigation and autopsies are planned for today."

"Investigators found Harbula had a single gunshot wound to the head. Outside a partially open window of the home were found two shotgun shells.

"The woman's husband, Walter Oswald, 56, lived at 44 W. Vine St., in the Gibbstown section of Greenwich Township,

"The two had had a history of domestic violence, including an incident about 4:15 p.m. Saturday at Harbula's residence in which police were called and removed Oswald.

"Harbula subsequently obtained a temporary restraining order against Oswald.

"In attempting to execute search and arrest warrants at the Oswald residence at about 1 p.m. today, members of the Gloucester County Prosecutor's Office and the Gloucester County Special Weapons and Tactics Unit entered the residence and found a man confirmed to be Oswald, dead from what appeared to be a self-inflicted shotgun wound.

"Oswald also was arrested on a weapons possession charge for having a shotgun late Saturday by New Jersey State Police, walking along Route 130, about two miles from the Harbula residence.

"State troopers who took him into custody were unaware of the TRO Harbula had obtained, since it had not yet been entered into automated records, and Oswald was released on his own recognizance.

"It is not known whether Harbula was already dead when Oswald was picked up."

Spree Killer Packs It In

"SAMSON, AL - The details of a shooting spree across three southern Alabama towns began to come to light Wednesday, a day after a gunman killed 10 people, including family members and several apparent strangers, before committing suicide. Hours after the shootings began on Tuesday it became clear that the attacker, 27-year-old Michael McLendon, had first shot and killed his mother before setting her house on fire in Kinston, Alabama, near the Florida state line, local media reported.

"Police said in televised press briefings on Wednesday the rampage was the worst in the southern state's history. A motive for the shootings remained unclear.

"He then killed seven people in three homes in the neighbouring town of Samson, including his grandparents, an uncle and aunt, and a neighbour - who was the wife of one of the officers who responded to the shooting - and their young child. An infant was also injured in the attack.

"The gunman, who was described as carrying a semiautomatic weapon, is believed to have acted alone, state police said.

"After leaving the town, the gunman is reported to have opened fire on an Alabama state policeman on a highway. The officer suffered minor injuries from broken glass, and his squad car was struck by seven bullets.

"Two more victims were shot to death along the same highway, one at a business and the second at a petrol filling station.

"Outside the nearby town of Geneva, the gunman is suspected of unleashing 30 rounds at a metal manufacturing company with police in pursuit. A Geneva police chief was wounded at the scene.

"The suspect entered the small factory, where he was a former employee, and police followed after hearing more gunfire to find the body of the gunman with an apparent self-inflicted bullet wound.

Hummer Owner Chooses Watery Grave

"HAMMOND, IN - Police found an SUV sinking into the icy waters of Lake Michigan at the Hammond Marina on Monday and a wounded woman bleeding on the boat launch.

"Two people are dead in the apparent murder-suicide attempt, a 39-year-old Mississippi man whose body was found inside the sunken Hummer H2, and a 55-year-old woman who died of multiple gunshot wounds to the torso after being taken to St. Margaret Mercy, Police Chief Brian Miller said.

"A marina security guard told police she saw the black SUV parked on the launch ramp around 12:45 p.m., and told the driver he had to move. There was a woman in the passenger seat and the driver said they wouldn't be parked long.

"The security guard drove off, then heard a gunshot and saw the woman tumble out the passenger-side door before the H2 idled down the slope and into the water, Miller said. A marina employee tried to hold the sinking SUV in place from the pier, and told police he still thought someone was inside.

"The woman was in critical condition when emergency crews arrived. She had a Florida driver's license, but investigators believe she may be a Valparaiso resident, Miller said.

"The Lake County Dive Team and a towing crew needed about an hour to pull the Hummer, which had drifted under an adjacent pier, from the water. The Hummer had Florida license plates, but vehicle records for the truck were not on file with Florida authorities, Miller said."
